Instrumentation Engineer

We are looking for an engineer or physicist with expertise in designing and building instrumentation for research.

Neuroscience Research Partnership
- A*STAR
http://www.nrp.a-star.edu.sg/
Location: 61 Biopolis Drive, Proteos Building, Singapore 138673

The Neuroscience Research Partnership (NRP) is in an exciting expansion phase and has grown to 17 groups at Duke-NUS GMS, and 5 A-STAR groups at Biopolis since 2007. The recently formed Laboratory of Neurogenetics under the direction of Dr Adam Claridge-Chang focuses on analysing essential cognitive functions with behavioural, genetic, anatomical and physiological methods, with an aim to discovering some of the basic components and mechanisms that underlie psychiatric and cognitive dysfunction.

Work in the laboratory will require ongoing instrumentation development that will employ some or all of the following technologies: software engineering, mechanical engineering (CAD); electrical engineering (signal detection and generation, digital signal processing, signal conditioning, signal modulation, ADC and DAC, electronics and PCB design); imaging, optics and photonics (computer vision, microscopy, CCDs, high-power LEDs, lasers, optical systems, beam steering); liquid and gas flow control; and system integration, automation and control.

We are looking for a Instrumentation Engineer with expertise in the following areas: programming (LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python); instrument design; mechanical design (CAD), electronics (prototyping and PCB design). Additional expertise in several of the following areas would be beneficial: real-time image analysis; laser scanning imaging systems; optical design; microfluidics; system integration, automation & control.

The ideal candidate will have:

- A graduate degree (or relevant experience) in engineering, physics or another relevant discipline.
- Expertise in LabVIEW, MATLAB and Python, including real-time applications.
- Practical experience in mechanical design including familiarity with CAD, electronics prototyping and PCB design.
- Some knowledge of biological systems and an interest in the study of the brain.
- Experience in optics and photonics, including laser scanning imaging systems (multiphoton and confocal microscopy).
- Experience in project management

Your main duties include but are not limited to the following:-

- Effective communication with neuroscientists to determine their instrumentation requirements;
- Development of instrument specifications;
- Identification of project and operational risks;
- Lead instrument design role on collaborative projects involving mechanical and electrical engineering;
- Proof of principle by analysis and laboratory evaluation;
- Detailed design, implementation and testing;
- Construction, maintenance and documentation of instruments;
- Assist in multidisciplinary collaborative projects with engineering labs in other A*STAR Institutes.
- Share responsibility for the housekeeping of the laboratory area and general maintenance tasks
- Conduct sourcing and procurement
- Share responsibility with others for the safety in the laboratory
- Perform any other duties as may be required from time to time to ensure the efficient running of the laboratory
